The Cause of Illness
Before we can solve the pandemic of chronic health problems facing our society we must first find out what is causing them.
Treating the effects of problems NEVER creates a solution. I am focused on addressing causes; of creating health and vitality. I am not focused on treating effects.
Let’s do some scientific and logical investigation into the truth regarding the actual cause of chronic health problems and the ONLY viable solutions
When someone is expressing a state of illness it states the obvious in saying the body is not working correctly. The imperative question to ask is why? What is causing the body to act this way?
There are 2 reasons you are not in a state of health …
1. Your body is toxic; there is something present that is causing an irritation.
or
2. Your body is deficient; you are not getting something you need to function.
This is at the root of all illness!!!
Every time you are exposed to stressors from toxicity and/or deficiency your body is forced into a state of adaptation. For example, if you lived in the mountains of Colorado you would have a higher red blood cell count because of the high altitude. That makes sense, right? Your innate intelligence would ADAPT to this change. It is a perfectly appropriate response considering the environment in which you are in.
Illness and the symptoms of illness are not errors by your genes; they are states of adaptation caused by errors in lifestyle choice and/or exposure to environmental stressors.
Pathology is mythology – there are only states of adaptive physiology.
The Stress Response
So let’s talk some more about this stress response. This information is vital; it lays the foundation for the entire wellness movement and will give you the underlying cause of many, if not all of the health issues we deal with in our society. Isn’t that information you would want to know about....
Do you remember way back (well, way back for me…) in High School when your biology teacher taught you about fight or flight? Let me refresh your memory…
Let’s say you were out camping somewhere. You are enjoying the great hiking, fresh air, rest and relaxation. You are at a beautiful river filling your water jug when BAM, out of nowhere jumps a saber tooth tiger.
Now do you sit there and wonder to yourself, hmmmm, I wonder if I should boogie? No, maybe he’s an old tiger and his gums are bad and he couldn’t really hurt me…
Heck no! Your body goes into “HOLY SMOKES” mode, otherwise known as “fight or flight”.
Now all sorts of things happen when your body goes into fight or flight. Remember, this is really important… listen up.
Remember the analogy of living in Colorado and having more red blood cell production as a result of it. That is an adaptation, or what could be called a survival effect of the stress of living in a high altitude.
The following is a description of the survival effects of fight or flight.
The first thing that happens is your nervous system detects a stimulus. (A BIG stimulus, if you know what I mean!!!).
That stimulus is then sent to your adrenals (little almond shaped gland that sits on top of your kidneys…). From there the adrenals work like crazy in releasing STRESS HORMONES for your survival. This is a summary of what happens…
- Increased heart rate and blood pressure: this is needed for increased exertion, to circulate stress hormones & for energy substrates for fight or flight.
- Increase blood sugar: needed for energy for fight or flight.
- Reduced insulin receptors: this allows you to prevent storing the blood glucose that you need for fight or flight.
- Increased fatty acids in the blood: these can be converted to glucose for more energy for fight or flight.
- Increased clotting factors in the blood: wound clotting from fight or flight.
- Reduced uptake of LDL: So more LDL cholesterol stays in your bloodstream. This is important in both wound clotting and for making more stress hormones.
- Reduced immune system: this system cannot save your from an attack, it is only useful IF you survive the attack. This system also uses a great deal of energy so it makes sense to down-regulate it UNTIL you have survived the acute threat.
- Reduce activity in brain areas for attention, learning, and short term memory: this allows you to focus on escape routes and prevents you from focusing attention on any single threat.
- Stimulate brain areas for fear and anxiety: this keeps the stress hormones flowing for as long as you need them – for as long as you are in the crisis.
- Reduce activity in brain areas for relaxation and pleasure: you don’t want to be relaxed or associate pleasure with periods of danger.
- Reduce all growth hormones and digestive activity: you don’t want to be sending blood and using energy in areas for digestion and growth at the expense of surviving a crisis.
All of these effects of fight or flight are designed to allow you to survive a short term emergency. Without these innate adaptations you would die from any acute stressor.
The devastating effects of chronic fight or flight/chronic stress hormone release:
- Chronic increased: blood pressure, heart rate, clotting factors, blood fat, insulin, and glucose lead to heart disease and stroke.
- Chronic increased blood sugar, blood fatty acids and reduced insulin receptors lead to chronic increased insulin production and diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Because stress hormones are made of sugar and fat chronic stress also causes cravings for fat and sugar. Back in the good ‘ol days the tendency would be to reach for healthy fats (meat, nuts, etc…) and healthy sugars (fruits and veggies). But thanks to our industrialized culture the fats and sugars we have a tendency to reach for now are refined, processed and devoid of any nutrient value AND adds more stress to an already stressed system.
- Chronic decreased immune system and increased insulin leads to decreased sex hormone binding globulin leading to cancer, colds, flus, and other infections.
- Chronic decreased: learning and attention
- Chronic stimulation: anxiety and fear lead to anxiety, fear, depression, low self esteem, and learning attention deficits. Being in a state of chronic stress depletes serotonin so you don’t have enough left to elicit feelings of happiness and contentment.
Pretty interesting, eh?
You may be thinking to yourself, yeah, but I have never come across a saber tooth tiger, so what’s the big deal with all this???
Well, the very, very big deal is this ….
When we put ourselves in a chronically stressful environment (ie: our society and the lifestyle choices we make) we force our body to adapt to this environment by producing a chronic stress response.
  
 
This intelligent adaptation is not a disease – the chronically stressful environment is.
So when your body is in a state of adaptation (illness, dis-ease, disease), what is the tendency in our society to do? (Go to your medical doctor…) And what are you most likely going to get? (Drugs…) And what is this going to do to address the underlying cause of why your body created this intelligent adaptation in the first place? (Nothing…)
The medical approach to this intelligent adaptation is to take drugs to treat the symptoms, without addressing the underlying cause of why the body created this response in the first place

The only way to get and stay healthy is to remove the stressors and to provide the proper eating, moving, and thinking nutrients! Purity and sufficiency!!!

How can this be? The United States spends more money on medical research and development than any other country.

Every year the United States has more and more Medical Doctors, Nurses, Drugs, Hospitals, etc.. Yet every year we have more and more sickness, disease and death. IF this system (the allopathic/medical model) were working wouldn’t the opposite be true? If the medical/allopathic model were working wouldn’t we have more health & vitality?
The truth is we don’t. The truth is the allopathic/medical model is not working for health care.
What makes more sense to you? That someone is deficient in prozac, lipitor, or any other drug that you could name OR that someone is chronically toxic and/or deficient driving their physiology into a state of adaptation.
The Role of a Wellness Doctor
The role of a wellness doctor is to help you identify and handle the two most important questions you will ever encounter regarding health.
1. Where am I toxic and deficient? 2. Where can I add purity and sufficiency?
Addressing these questions will drive your physiology towards health, whereas in the medical/allopathic model the question is “What do I have and how do I make it go away?” What do I have and how do I make it go away is not a question that is posed for health care; it is a question that is posed for disease care. Stepping into the allopathic/medical model will drive your physiology away from health because drugs treat the symptoms without addressing the underlying cause and give the illusion of health by decreasing symptoms while creating more stress and more adaptive physiology!!! PHEW! It’s a mouthful and well worth digesting!!!!

Scientific research indicates the simple truth that human beings living in industrialized societies are exposed to chronic deficiencies and toxicities that we are not designed to. The Story of the Great Lakes
Back in the 70’s there was an issue of the fish in the Great Lakes becoming diseased and dying. The birds were eating the diseased fish so naturally they were becoming diseased and dying and the entire ecosystem was affected.
What is the scientific and logical solution to the health problems of the fish and birds of the great lakes? Do drugs and surgery make sense? Is that going to help with what is causing the problem or does removing toxins and restoring sufficient nutrients make more sense? The answer is self-evident. This being true then why is it when it comes to the health of the human species the answer is so dramatically different?
What is the only scientific and logical solution to the pandemic of human chronic illness? More drugs and surgery or better lifestyle choices? The answer is self-evident.
What has changed over the last few centuries; our genes or our lifestyle choices and thus the expression of our genes? The answer is self-evident.
Barring death from trauma or starvation, pre-industrial and pre-agricultural peoples lived long, full, active, productive lives. When we changed from a natural hunter-gatherer way of life to a crowded, polluted, stressful, industrial way of life the human lifespan was drastically reduced. When methods to clean up sewage, provide ample non-rancid foods, improve working and living conditions and clean the polluted air and water were put into action the average lifespan quickly began to recover.
This does not represent an increase in lifespan due to medical intervention and modern technology. It represents a decrease in early death due to environmental toxicity and deficiency.

10 Fundamental Truths Regarding Health & Sickness
1. All living things are composed of cells working harmoniously together in a self-healing & self-regulating ecosystem to maintain health & life.
2. Our cells are innately/ genetically equipped from birth with all the necessary intelligence for healthy function. Our cells are programmed for health & they NEVER function outside of health unless they are forced to adapt to physical, emotional, chemical, or spiritual stressors.
3. Our cells are genetically programmed for health; it is our lifestyle choices and living environment that determine whether or not the proper ingredients are supplied!
4. Health is a state of consistent homeostatic cell function. 5. Sickness is a sate of a lack of consistent homeostatic cell function. Sickness is a lack of health just like darkness is a lack of light.
6. The state of function of our cells determines our states of health & sickness.
7. The cause of all non-homeostatic cell function is environmental stressors.
8. All environmental stressors can be divided into one of two categories: 1. Deficiencies in the required ingredients for proper cell function. 2. Toxicities that poison cells.
9. Because cells are born with all the required intelligence for health, cells always function perfectly in relation to any given environment. Symptoms do NOT represent an error in the genetic intelligence of cells. Symptoms represent important signals from your innate telling you that there is something wrong, that there is environmental deficiency or a toxicity, that you are under stress.
Illness physiology represents the innate intelligence’s best ability to adapt to a chronic unhealthy environment, to chronic deficiency or toxicity, to chronic stressors. The innate intelligence NEVER expresses pathological cell function, it only expresses ADAPTIVE cell function in relation to a pathological unhealthy ENVIRONMENT. In the complete absence of any scientific evidence to suggest that genes are programmed for, or randomly create sickness it is illogical and erroneous to consider the genetic intelligence or the cell as the cause of the illness; we must always look at the environment. 10. In order to express healthy cell function, the innate intellige nce must have all nutrients supplied and be free of toxicity. In other words it is impossible to be 100% healthy by supplying only some of the requirements or by eliminating only some of the toxins. This is why other programs fail; they treat a single symptom or address a single deficiency or toxicity but fail to create an entire healthy environment. Plants can’t be healthy even if they have all the water and nutrients they require if they are missing sunlight. Even if they have all the required sunlight, water, and nutrients but are being poisoned they cannot be healthy. The same principle is true for human beings. You can’t be sufficient and pure in some areas and deficient or toxic in others and be healthy. This is why my program is so successful; it addresses deficiencies and toxicities creates sufficiency and purity. This program provides the ingredients for, and removes interferences to, the innate genetic blueprint for homeostasis and health; it fosters genetically congruent living.
Can you think of any illness that isn’t the result of cells having to adapt to stresses?

The only difference between our healthy ancestors and our sick society is toxicity and deficiency. The genes are the same!
- Modern illness is due to environmental NOT genetic factors. Modern illnesses are AVOIDABLE! Modern health is ATTAINABLE!
Can you think of any cause of cell stress other than deficiency or toxicity? If all your cells are functioning properly is it POSSIBLE to be sick?

Medicine vs. Wellness

If your house is on fire who are you going to call? The fire department, of course! And if all goes well they are going to make a huge mess saving your home.

And after the fire is out, who do you call? The carpenter, painter, plumber, cleaners and electrician, of course!
If your mind and body is your house then Medical Doctors are the fire department and wellness doctors are the maintenance and repair department.
Does this mean that it is never appropriate to take drugs or have a surgical procedure? Of course not! That would be unscientific. It is scientific fact that medical interventions can save a life in a crisis and we should all be grateful for the wonderful innovations that medicine has developed in this area.
However, it is also a scientific fact that no drug or surgery will ever make your cells function better, improve your health, or prevent you from getting sick The fire department is very appropriate if your house is on fire (in an emergency crisis) but totally inappropriate if you want to repair or maintain your house.

There is no drug or surgery that will ever solve a problem created by a deficiency in genetically required raw materials for the expression of health. There is no drug or surgery that will ever solve a problem created by exposure to toxins that prevent the expression of health.
Until these universal, undeniable scientific truths are recognized and incorporated in mainstream thoughts and actions we will continue to get sicker and sicker, suffer more an more, and die of preventable illness in the midst of greater use of drugs and surgery.
It is a historical fact that this is exactly what has been happening over the past century. We are dying by the millions of ‘lifestyle diseases’ and the only solution medicine has to offer is more drugs and surgery. We are dying fully medicated!
More drugs and surgery is NOT the solution. If drugs and surgery were free and unlimited we would get sicker not healthier. This is exactly what is happening.
The only scientific solution is to supply our body and mind with the proper resources and to avoid toxins.

What is the role of a properly moving spine?
Movement of the spine energizes your brain and your brain co-ordinates the show! Healthy spinal bones, tissues and spinal nerve flow depend on normal spinal motion and alignment.
Problems occur when normal spinal motion and alignment are affected; when a joint looses its normal range of motion there is a series of events that occur:
 1.Joint damage.
The spinal and extremity (shoulder, arm, hand, leg, knee, feet) joints get stuck. This increases the stress on the joints, discs and ligaments, causing “locked” or “clicking” joints, pain reduced range of motion, postural imbalance and a loss of energy. Wear and tear causes arthritic changes to the joints and nearby tissues.
 2.Nerve damage. There is an increase in neurological stress pathways. This stress alters brain function in regions that regulate stress, immunity, thinking, learning, concentration, emotions, organ function, sleep, digestion, overall hormonal function, neuromuscular coordination, balance, strength & agility.
3.Tissue damage.  Swelling occurs innately to guard the area from further damage. This abnormal pressure on the joints and nearby soft tissue results in tender and painful areas, (especially to the touch, burning, ache, stabbing, and pins and needles sensations.
 4.Muscle damage. Muscles become chronically tense and in spasm. (Many people mistake this for emotional stress and fatigue ie: working at the computer all day). Muscles, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments become weakened. Pain and postural distortions are common.
 5.Health degeneration. Dis-ease (overall body malfunction) occurs, as well as accelerated aging, chronic fatigue, lowered resistance to disease, joint degeneration, bone deformation, disc destruction and loss of height.
WOW!!!
The following diagram illustrated a normal, healthy neck. The left is an x-ray of the neck from the side. The spine is in its proper alignment. There is no stress on the joints, nerves, tissue or muscles. The diagram on the right is a cross section of a human neck. The spinal cord shows no stress or irritation from misalignment or degeneration. The spinal health of this individual is perfect.

This diagram shows a spine that is out of alignment. There is massive degeneration of the spine and the spinal cord is compressed as a result. This will in turn adversely affects the health of this individual by putting stress on the joints, nerves, tissues and muscles.
 
More importantly, this decay can be causing devastation WITHOUT symptoms, just like diabetes, cancer & heart disease.

What is a Vertebral Subluxation?
Vertebral Subluxation complex is the term that describes the spinal bone loosing its normal range of motion and alignment, thus causing spinal bone and tissue decay, degeneration and creating unhealthy neurological pathways (The Stress Response).

Is Vertebral Subluxation Common?
Yes. In fact Vertebral Subluxation is pandemic in the industrialized world because the way we currently live is filled with physical, emotional & chemical stressors that cause Vertebral Subluxation .
After 15 years in practice my observation is that subluxation occurs from many things over a long period of time. It is also my observation that most children that reach kindergarten are subluxated if they have not been checked by a chiropractor.
Who do you know that has not been subject to some kind of birth stress (forceps, c-section, vacuum extraction? Even a healthy, natural birth is stressful to both the mother and child. What child do you know that has not been subject to back packs, sitting in school, poor posture, TV., computers, sports, repetative movements, falls, accidents, etc… What adults do you know that has not been subject to the same?
Subluxation is inevitable if you are not maintaining your spine with regular chiropractic check ups REGARDLESS OF PAIN. Remember, you can have a cavity and not have a toothache. Gauging your health on how you are feeling in inaccurate! THIS is why I am such an advocate in having the entire family checked, preventatively. Why wait to develop subluxation when it can be prevented?

What is the role of proper nutrition?
In realizing that optimal health is proper cell function, then we must agree that the raw materials we put into our bodies will either support cell function or cause cell dysfunction. We also know that toxicity and deficiency create a state of disease and that purity and sufficiency create a state of wellness. With all of that in mind, it is easy to recognize all we absorb should be pure and natural. The foods that we choose to eat, and the products we choose to put on our skin or use in our home should support cell function so we can live in wellness as nature intended.
One of the saddest outcomes of our industrial society is the changes that have occurred in our food system. We no longer live in a pristine world. Our waters are polluted and our topsoil is depleted so that our foods are lacking in nutrients. The very way in which we prepare foods and come together for meals has changed too; and not for the better! We are overwhelmed by modernity and have made the mistake of trading the healthy diets of our ancestors for new fangled quick foods of corporations. Although not commonplace in our modern society, it is possible to make food choices that support health. For optimal cell health we need the healthy farm fresh, nutrient-dense foods that nourished us for thousands of years. Foods that our bodies recognize as real and know exactly how to utilize! We also need to create rhythms in our kitchens that will support and maximize the absorption of vitamins and minerals that we obtain from our meals. In summary, nourishing cells to create harmony is the role of proper nutrition. Making snacks and meals that create harmony and balance in the body is both joyous and simple!
